Welcome!

Website and blog launch: CurtisMW.com and WineAlpha.com

Welcome to the launch (or more properly the re-launch) of my website and blog - I hope that you will find them useful and interesting, and I’d love to hear your comments.  The raison d’être of the website is to allow those interested to access my list of tasting notes.  You will find the website here: http://CurtisMW.com

As most of you receiving this know, I have been interested in wine for several decades, and I have been working in the wine trade for eighteen years.  During this time, I have written brief comments on the wines that have most impressed me, and in recent years I have begun to curate the list, pruning notes of wines I didn’t like or don’t find interesting.

Who is interested in mediocre wine?  Occasionally I will write a poor review of wine that I thought should be good, and I will include almost everything from big surveys like primeurs week in Bordeaux or a big swing through Burgundy.  Generally, however, I don’t have enough time to write up mediocre wines, and you certainly shouldn’t spend time reading about them, much less drinking them!

A cursory glance at the list will show that the list is dominated by Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne.  The majority of the wine, in fact, falls into the “fine and rare” category – wines that appreciate in value as they improve with age.  I also include a smaller number of wines that interest me as a Master of Wine.  These latter wines might be obscure or hard-to-find and there is often no secondary market for them.  I include them here for the wine geeks among us, since I certainly count myself in that category.

You will notice that each wine has a rating from one to five stars, and a limited number of wines have a very emphatic five stars “*****!” which denote them as being among the greatest wines I’ve ever tasted.  This list will evolve and change over time – I just added new ones this month – so stay tuned, and feel free to comment with your own favorites.

Other than the tasting notes, I include as well copies of recent magazine articles that I have penned and details of upcoming events in which I am involved.  While we fine-tune the system for making reservations and buying tickets for the events directly on the site, please email me directly.

You will also find a link here (http://WineAlpha.com) to my blog, where you will find everything from travel notes to random musings as well as the most recent notes on what I have been drinking lately.  The blog is separate from the website, although both are linked to each other.  As an antidote to the inherently narcissistic nature of a blog, I hope you will write to tell me what sort of posts are the most interesting.  Here's to conquering the world of wine, one glass at a time.

Cheers!

Charles
